The Starlit Society

House Rules

How We Play. Who we are, what we value, and how we play together.

A gathering place

The Starlit Society is a gathering place. We come together over one of the oldest games in the world, but what we are truly practicing is attention, patience, and connection. Every seat at every table is an invitation to learn, to be welcomed, and to grow.

This Charter is our founding promise. It describes who we are, what we value, and the spirit we bring to one another. It is not a list of rules so much as an understanding, the quiet agreement that makes a room feel gracious the moment you walk in.

Our Purpose

We believe Mahjong is more than a game. It is a way to sharpen the mind, honor a rich cultural tradition, and build the kind of friendships that last well beyond a single afternoon. Our purpose is to create beautiful, welcoming experiences where people of every background and skill level can learn, connect, and feel at home.

Strategy. Connection. Confidence. For life.

What Membership Means

Starlit Society itself is free. Anyone can join Season 1, propose games, and keep a record of play. Membership is the in-person pass: unlimited Open Play at the host venue. You are welcomed not for how well you play, but for the care you bring to the table and to the people around it.

House Values

These are the values we practice together. They are how we treat one another, and how we keep every table a place people are glad to return to.

  • We welcome warmly. Every newcomer is greeted, included, and given room to learn. No one is left to feel like a stranger.
  • We teach generously. Knowledge is meant to be shared. We explain, we encourage, and we celebrate one another's progress without condescension.
  • We play graciously. We win with humility and lose with ease. The pleasure is in the play and the company, never in the score alone.
  • We honor the tradition. We hold the history and craftsmanship of Mahjong with respect, and we represent it thoughtfully to others.
  • We protect the room. We keep our gatherings safe, kind, and free of judgment. Discrimination, unkindness, and disruption have no place among us.
  • We show up with care. We are present, considerate, and mindful of the experience of everyone at the table, from the first tile to the last.

Our Closing Promise

When you sit at a Starlit table, you can expect to be met with grace, taught with patience, and treated as a valued part of the whole. In turn, we ask that you extend the same to others. This is the heart of the Society, a place to learn, to belong, and to thrive, for life.
